About the event
Join us for a special evening with Joseph Havel, artist and longtime Director of the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
For more than 20 years, Havel has played a central role in Houston’s contemporary art community while developing a distinctive sculptural practice of his own. His work is held in major public collections in the United States and internationally.
We’ll meet Havel in his extraordinary studio, housed in a deconsecrated church, where the historic architecture provides a striking setting for his sculptures.
Havel is known for transforming ordinary domestic objects — shirts, bedsheets, drapes, and other familiar materials — into unexpected sculptural forms. Describing his practice as uncovering “the activity of still objects,” he explores how objects carry memory, meaning, and emotion.
Based in Houston, Paris, and Ménerbes, France, Havel brings together a unique perspective shaped by both American and European artistic traditions.
